Set against the vibrant backdrop of Lagos, Dust to Dreams tells the story of a dying nightclub owner who entrusts her daughter with the legacy of her iconic music club. The return of the woman’s estranged soldier father stirs long-buried family tensions, but through the power of music, they rediscover their shared bond. The film reaches its emotional high point in a duet that restores broken relationships and revives the once-thriving venue.
The cast features British singer-songwriter Seal alongside celebrated Nollywood stars Nse Ikpe-Etim, Eku Edewor, Atlanta Bridget Johnson, and Constance Olatunde. Elba described the film as a deeply collaborative process involving artists and musicians united by themes of family and enduring love.
Producer Mo Abudu, who recently launched the streaming platform EbonyLife ON Plus, highlighted the project’s cultural and emotional depth. She emphasized that Dust to Dreams captures universal themes of connection, love, and identity—offering a portrayal of Africa rooted in authenticity rather than stereotypes.
Produced under EbonyLife Films, the short features contributions from Heidi Uys, Gina Carter, Temidayo Makanjuola, and Inem King, with support from Afreximbank. Dust to Dreams premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, followed by a European screening at the BFI London Film Festival. The film is currently in consideration for both Oscar and BAFTA recognition.
A behind-the-scenes feature exploring the making of Dust to Dreams will also debut on EbonyLife ON, offering viewers insight into the production process and creative collaboration. Additionally, the film’s original soundtrack, Mama—co-written by Seal, Constance Olatunde, Idris Elba, and The Cavemen—will be available globally on Spotify from November 14.
